4 Core Skills of an Effective Digital Marketer

3 decades ago, digital marketing was born.

The term was first used in the 1990s. And the global digital advertising and marketing industry is expected to reach $786.2 billion by 2026. It would be a challenge to find a thriving company today that doesn’t have a digital marketing arm.

But what fundamental skills and knowledge render a digital marketer effective?

  1. Analytical skills. One of the benefits of digital over traditional marketing is its ability to provide more data on how consumers interact with brands. But any volume of data will be useless without insightful interpretation.
  2. Understanding of customer behavior. The core purpose of marketing is to create value for customers and capture value in return. At the heart of it is the consumer. Hence, a comprehensive and deep understanding of their behavior is non-negotiable when creating digital marketing campaigns.
  3. Continuous learning and experimentation with channels. There are countless digital platforms out there, and to be everywhere all at once is rarely an effective nor a profitable strategy. This is why it’s essential to learn the ropes in different channels and experiment with which ones give the highest return on investment.
  4. Fundamentals of marketing. Going back to the first principles helps us break a complex problem or idea down to its simplest form, so we can think for ourselves and build solutions that most people miss. While it’s easy to get distracted by the shiny trends in the world wide web, digital marketers with a solid understanding of marketing will be ahead of those who don’t. Effective digital marketers balance evergreen strategies that set up the business for long-term success and online tactics that offer short-term boosts to the biz.
